A 30-foot-long dead whale washed ashore on the bank of the Andharmanik River in Taltali upazila of Barguna on Wednesday.
Members of the Forest Department and the Coast Guard recovered the whale after being informed of its presence.
The carcass was recovered around noon near a ferry ghat in Charpara area of Barabagi Union.
Local residents said the whale likely drifted into the river from the sea with the tidal current sometime during the night before becoming stranded along the riverbank.
Fishermen spotted the huge carcass in the morning. As news spread, crowds gathered to see the whale. Later, Forest Department officials went to the site and recovered it.
Ziaur Rahman, range officer of the Taltali Forest Department, said they reached the spot after receiving the information. The whale had already started decomposing and was emitting a foul smell.
“To prevent environmental pollution, the carcass will be buried,” he said.
Taltali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Atish Sarker said a Forest Department team had gone to the site and Coast Guard personnel were also present.
Authorities were taking necessary measures regarding the carcass, he said, adding that the species of the large black whale had not yet been identified.
