Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has returned home after completing a five-day official visit to the United Nations peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and Abyei.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed his return in a press release issued on Friday.
During the visit, the army chief inspected Bangladesh Army’s engineering company and infantry battalion, as well as a Bangladesh Navy force marine unit deployed under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). He also visited a Bangladesh Army infantry battalion deployed under the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
At both mission areas, General Waker-Uz-Zaman urged Bangladeshi peacekeepers to remain highly alert and perform their duties with professionalism, discipline and dedication.
He also met Bangladeshi staff officers, military observers and contingent members serving in UNMISS and UNISFA and was briefed on their activities and the overall situation in the missions.
As part of the visit, the army chief separately met and held discussions with UNMISS Force Commander Major General Junhui Wu and UNISFA Force Commander Lieutenant General Ganesh Kumar Shrestha.
He also met the mission leadership team in Abyei and national monitors from Sudan and South Sudan. Discussions covered the missions’ overall activities, security situation and operational challenges.
In South Sudan, General Waker-Uz-Zaman paid courtesy calls on Defence Minister Chol Thon Balok and Chief of Defence Forces General Santino Deng Wol. He was accorded a guard of honour by the South Sudan Defence Forces.
The visit is expected to boost the morale of Bangladeshi peacekeepers and further strengthen Bangladesh’s cooperation and relations with the United Nations and the countries concerned.
It is also expected to contribute to expanding Bangladesh’s role in UN peacekeeping operations.
