Import and export activities through Bangladesh’s Benapole land port were suspended on Saturday as India observed its Independence Day.
Trade operations between Bangladesh and India stopped from Saturday morning due to the public holiday in India. However, passenger movement through the Benapole-Petrapole immigration checkpoint remained normal.
Aminul Haque, vice-president of the Benapole Port Importers and Exporters Association, confirmed the suspension, saying trading activities were halted in observance of India’s Independence Day.
“Import and export operations will resume as usual from Sunday morning,” he said.
Saiful Rahman, officer-in-charge of Benapole Checkpost Immigration Police, said passport-holding passengers continued to cross the border normally despite the suspension of cargo operations.
