Today marks the 20th death anniversary of eminent Bangladeshi poet, journalist and columnist Shamsur Rahman, who passed away on August 17, 2006, at the age of 76.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential poets of modern Bengali literature, Shamsur Rahman wrote more than 60 books of poetry and played a significant role in the country’s literary and cultural movements.
Born on October 23, 1929, in Dhaka, Rahman’s poetry explored themes including humanism, love, democracy, urban life, freedom and opposition to religious fundamentalism.
His works also vividly reflected Bangladesh’s Liberation War and major political and social movements.
His acclaimed poems include Shadhinota Tumi and Asader Shirt, which remain deeply associated with Bangladesh’s history of struggle and resistance.
He received several prestigious honours, including the Bangla Academy Literary Award and Ekushey Padak.
Shamsur Rahman is remembered as a pioneering voice of modern Bengali poetry, and his literary legacy continues to inspire generations of readers and writers.
