The government will soon form a Public Administration Reform Commission to overhaul and modernise the country’s civil administration, Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Nazrul Islam Khan said on Monday.
He made the remarks in response to questions from journalists at a discussion marking 180 days of the government.
Nazrul Islam Khan said some issues involving those who would assist the commission need to be resolved before it is formed to ensure it can work effectively.
“That is why it is taking a little time. It will happen soon, InshaAllah,” he said.
Prime Minister’s Adviser for Public Administration Ismail Zabihullah said the government had not moved away from its election manifesto commitment to establish the commission.
He said the government was already taking steps toward administrative reform, with the Ministry of Public Administration beginning several initiatives.
Zabihullah also said the government had been working to identify and remove officials considered loyal to the previous administration from sensitive positions, while stressing that the process would continue.
He said the government must move away from the politicisation of the civil service without taking steps that could harm the country or its people.
He added that the government had reviewed a report on public administration reform prepared during the interim government and was now preparing to formally establish a reform commission.
Meanwhile, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan said work was also underway to establish a Media Commission.
He said the government was committed to institutionalising an environment in which the media could operate without government control or undue influence.
