Dr Khairul Islam, regional director for South Asia at international organisation WaterAid, died at the age of 67 on Friday.
He died while undergoing treatment at Continental Hospital, formerly United Hospital, in Dhaka in the early hours of Friday. WaterAid Bangladesh Country Director Hasin Jahan confirmed the news.
Khairul was taken to the hospital on Thursday night after suffering a heart attack. He died early Friday, she said.
His son, Arko, is returning home from the United States. His funeral prayer will be held after Asr prayers on Saturday at Azad Mosque in Gulshan, Dhaka. He may later be buried at Rayerbazar.
Khairul earned his medical degree from Sir Salimullah Medical College and later completed postgraduate studies at NIPSOM and in Boston, United States.
Throughout his career, he made significant contributions to public health, water and sanitation, among other fields. He was also an author and researcher.
