Five newly appointed ministers and state ministers paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on Saturday.
They laid wreaths at the memorial around 1:20pm and stood in silence for a while to honour the sacrifices of those who gave their lives during the 1971 Liberation War.
The new cabinet members who paid tribute were Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, M Rashiduzzaman Millat, Saching Prue Jerry, Humayun Kabir and Mohammad Shamim Kaiser Lincoln.
Earlier in the morning, newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also paid tribute at the memorial.
The new ministers and state ministers were sworn in at Bangabhaban on Friday evening by President Mirza Fakhrul. Their portfolios were allocated later.
The four new ministers are BNP Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Bangladesh National Party (BJP) Chairman Andalib Rahman Partha, former State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat, and Bandarban MP Saching Prue Jerry.
The two new state ministers are Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir and Gaibandha-4 MP Mohammad Shamim Kaiser Lincoln.
Dr Moyeen Khan has been given the Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry, which was previously held by Mirza Fakhrul before he became president.
Millat has been appointed Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, while Saching Prue Jerry will head the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs.
Andalib Rahman Partha has been appointed Information and Broadcasting Minister.
Shamim Kaiser Lincoln has been given the Religious Affairs Ministry, while Humayun Kabir has been appointed State Minister for Foreign Affairs. He will serve alongside State Minister Shama Obaid Islam.
The latest changes mark the first major cabinet reshuffle since Prime Minister Tarique Rahman formed the government on February 17. The reshuffle also followed vacancies in several ministries and the election of Mirza Fakhrul as president.
