Law Minister Asaduzzaman has described the Rohingya crisis as an internal issue of Myanmar, saying the responsibility for resolving it ultimately lies with Myanmar.
He also stressed the need for national unity to protect Bangladesh’s sovereignty and said the government is addressing the Rohingya issue in line with international law and the Constitution.
The minister made the remarks at a discussion on resolving the Rohingya crisis at the National Press Club on Sunday (23 August).
Asaduzzaman said Bangladesh does not support interference in Myanmar’s internal affairs and reiterated that the Rohingya are not Bangladeshi and do not originate from Bangladesh.
“We view the Rohingya issue in the same way as the international community does—as an internal problem of Myanmar,” he said.
However, he noted that the crisis has become an international issue since Rohingya people sought refuge in Bangladesh. He said Bangladesh had provided shelter on humanitarian grounds and continued to stand by the displaced community.
The law minister also called for building public support for Bangladesh’s international initiatives on the Rohingya issue, saying the government must ensure that its efforts comply with international and human rights law.
