A Cumilla court has sentenced a housewife’s father-in-law, mother-in-law and brother-in-law to life imprisonment for the murder of Mariam Begum.
The court also fined each of the three convicts Tk20,000, with an additional six months in prison if they fail to pay the fine. Mariam’s husband, Abdul Matin, the fourth accused in the case, was acquitted.
Judge Md Shamsul Alam of the Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court in Cumilla delivered the verdict on Sunday (23 August). The three convicted defendants were present in the courtroom when the judgment was announced.
According to the case documents and court sources, Mariam was strangled to death on the night of September 24, 2005, following a family dispute in Chhupua village of Nangalkot upazila.
The following day, Mariam’s father, Soleman, filed a murder case with Nangalkot Police Station against four people.
After a lengthy judicial process, the court recorded testimony from 12 witnesses and reviewed the evidence before handing down the verdict.
Following the judgment, prosecution lawyer Md Ikram Hossain and Mariam’s relatives expressed satisfaction, saying the verdict had delivered justice after years of legal proceedings. They also called for the sentences to be implemented without delay.
