Two bakeries fined Tk50,000 for illegal food production

Two bakeries in Chandpur have been fined Tk50,000 for producing and selling food products without the required BSTI certification.

The fines were imposed during a joint drive by the district administration and the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) in the district on Monday (24 August).

Kashmiri Sweets and Live Bakery in the Ilish Chattar area was fined Tk25,000 for producing and advertising sweets, yoghurt, biscuits, bread, cakes and other food products without a BSTI licence.

Arabian Sweets and Pastry Shop on Mission Road was fined another Tk25,000 for the same offence.

The mobile court was led by Chandpur district administration’s Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md Rahmat Ullah, while BSTI Cumilla regional office Field Officer Md Aminul Islam Shakil served as the prosecutor.

Rahmat Ullah said producing or marketing products without a BSTI licence is a punishable offence under the BSTI Act 2018.

“Such drives will continue regularly in the public interest to ensure the quality and safety of food products,” he said.
