Two Indian nationals have been arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka with more than five kilograms of kush, along with foreign liquor and Indian sarees, officials said.
The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) said the two suspects—Sanawar Ali, 36, and Imtiaz Ahmed, 36, both residents of North 24 Parganas in India—were detained during an operation at the Green Channel of the airport’s arrivals area on Monday afternoon.
Acting on intelligence information, a special DNC team led by Assistant Director Dr Md Abu Sayeed Mia of the DNC Dhaka Metro (North) Airport Office took position at the Green Channel at around 1pm.
The two men were intercepted after arriving from Bangkok on Thai Airways flight TG-321.
In the presence of witnesses and members of different airport agencies, officials searched their travel trolleys and recovered 5.04 kilograms of kush, three litres of foreign liquor and 24 Indian sarees allegedly concealed beneath clothing.
Officials also seized two Indian passports, two boarding passes and four smartphones. The detainees were carrying US$400, 1,170 Thai baht and 1,170 Indian rupees, according to the DNC.
A case has been filed with Airport Police Station under relevant provisions of the Narcotics Control Act, 2018. DNC Airport Circle Inspector Shahriya Sharmin filed the case on behalf of the agency.
The DNC said several Bangladeshi nationals suspected of being linked to the two detainees had already been identified and would be brought under the law soon.
The agency said its regular anti-narcotics operations would continue as part of the government’s zero-tolerance policy against drugs.
