Govt to fast-track policy for battery-powered rickshaws

The government is set to formulate a policy soon to regulate the operation of battery-powered rickshaws on Dhaka’s major roads and highways, including where and to what extent they can operate.

The proposed policy will also set standards for the vehicles, assess their technical safety and capacity, and introduce requirements for driver training.

Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman disclosed the plan at a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday, where he briefed journalists on the progress of various government activities.

He said battery-powered rickshaws began operating on major roads in Dhaka following the fall of the previous government. While their operation has provided some convenience for commuters, it has also created several problems, particularly traffic congestion.

“The drivers often lack proper training, while questions also remain about whether these vehicles are sufficiently safe and meet the required technical standards,” he said.

The adviser said the government would move quickly to introduce the policy, which would clearly define the areas where battery-powered rickshaws can operate, the extent of their access to major roads and the standards they must meet.

At the briefing, Zahed Ur Rahman also highlighted the second phase of the government’s Family Card social protection programme. The phase began with the distribution of cards to 457 beneficiaries in Latifabad Union of Kishoreganj Sadar upazila.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Andalib Rahman Partha and State Minister Yaser Khan Chowdhury were also present at the press conference.
