The Election Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin, paid a courtesy call on President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Bangabhaban on Thursday (August 27).
This was the commission’s first meeting with the newly elected president.
Besides the CEC, Election Commissioners Abdur Rahmanel Masud, Anwarul Islam Sarker and Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah, along with Election Commission Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, attended the meeting. Election Commissioner Tahmida Ahmed is currently abroad.
Mirza Fakhrul was elected president in Parliament on August 20 and took oath as the country’s 23rd president on August 21. He stepped down as local government minister and secretary general of the ruling BNP to assume the presidency.
The current Election Commission was appointed in November 2024. It conducted the 13th parliamentary election in February 2026, followed by elections to reserved women’s seats in May and, most recently, the presidential election.
The commission has already completed major electoral tasks, including preparing the voter list, delimiting constituencies, and conducting parliamentary and presidential elections. It is now expected to gradually organise local government elections.
Earlier, Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said the courtesy meeting would provide an opportunity for the president to learn about the commission’s overall activities, including elections.
The newly elected president has already met the chiefs of the three services and the chief justice at Bangabhaban. The Election Commission was the latest constitutional body to meet him.
