A court in Jamalpur has sentenced three men, including a Union Parishad member, to death and life imprisonment in a widely discussed gang-rape case in Rashidpur.
Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim delivered the verdict on Monday (31 August).
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on the night of 19 October 2004 in the Bhatipara area of Rashidpur in Jamalpur Sadar. The victim was sleeping at home when the accused allegedly woke her, tied her mouth with a towel and forcibly took her to a bamboo grove near her house, where they raped her.
The victim later filed a case with the police. After a lengthy trial and testimony from 10 witnesses, the court found the charges proven beyond reasonable doubt and handed down the sentences.
The convicts are Rashidpur Union Parishad Ward No. 6 member Md Sattar Ali, Md Abdul Malek and Md Anu.
The court sentenced the three to both death and life imprisonment and fined each Tk1 lakh. The fines will be recovered and paid to the victim, the prosecution said.
The convicts were present in court when the verdict was announced.
