24 bodies, including child, recovered from Nepal home

Rescuers have recovered the bodies of 24 people, including a child, from a house in Nepal’s flood-hit Bidur area, with fears that more victims may still be trapped beneath the debris.

Police Superintendent Bipin Regmi said Tuesday (September 1) that rescuers would continue searching the site and surrounding homes for additional bodies.

Mangal Tamang, an official of Bidur’s Belkotgadhi municipality, said one of the recovered bodies was that of a child, while the others were adults. Six bodies were flown to Kathmandu, with the remaining bodies temporarily kept in the area before being transported to the capital.

The disaster was triggered by a massive flow of water and debris following a glacial collapse along the China-Nepal border on August 26, according to the US Geological Survey.

Nepali authorities said on Monday that 903 people had been confirmed dead and 4,247 remained missing. The missing include 933 people linked to hydropower projects.

Nepal’s Foreign Ministry said nearly 590 foreign nationals from 39 countries were still missing, while more than 10,000 people, including 323 foreigners, had been rescued from the affected areas.

The Red Cross estimates that more than 90,000 people may have been affected by the disaster.
