Qatar Energy has suspended LNG deliveries to several buyers in Asia and Europe as security risks continue to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz amid the US-Iran conflict.
For some cargoes, the suspension has been extended until early November. Bangladesh and Pakistan are among the Asian buyers affected, with QatarEnergy reportedly extending the force majeure period for Bangladesh beyond September.
Qatar is Bangladesh’s largest long-term LNG supplier. Petrobangla had expected around 40 cargoes from Qatar Energy in 2026, but disruptions caused by the conflict and difficulties in Hormuz have put nearly half of those supplies at risk.
Bangladesh has turned increasingly to the spot market to offset the shortfall. Petrobangla recently approved two September cargoes at around $24.63 and $24.25 per million British thermal units, well above the pre-war spot price of $10–12.
The supply disruption has already put pressure on electricity generation, industries and household gas supplies. Bangladesh is also expanding its list of LNG suppliers to secure alternative sources.
Qatar Energy halted LNG production on March 2 and declared force majeure two days later following disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Its LNG exports have since fallen sharply.
Industry analysts say the prolonged disruption could continue to affect LNG-dependent countries, with Bangladesh among the most exposed due to its heavy reliance on Qatari and other Gulf supplies.
