Heavy rains triggered by Typhoon Saudel have caused a river embankment to collapse in Putian city in southeastern China’s Fujian province, leaving many people missing.
Putian, located along the Mulan River, was hit by torrential rain from early Thursday, September 3. At around 4pm local time, the river embankment gave way under the pressure of the rising water, sending a huge volume of floodwater into the city and inundating large areas.
A local administrative official told China’s state-run Xinhua news agency on Friday that the number of missing people remained unclear. More than 100 homes were also completely destroyed in the flooding.
Authorities have rescued 1,260 people from affected areas and moved them to 30 government-run emergency shelters, the official said.
Although the rain eased somewhat on Saturday, weather authorities warned that the situation could remain critical. Forecasts indicate that heavy rainfall will continue in Putian and surrounding areas for at least another four days.
Emergency response teams have been ordered to remain on high alert as authorities continue rescue and relief operations.
