District Detective Branch (DB) police have claimed to solve the murder of drug dealer Shuvo Chandra Das within 24 hours, arresting three people in connection with the killing in Narayanganj.
The arrests were made on Sunday (6 September), while police said efforts were underway to arrest two suspected gunmen allegedly involved in the murder.
Shuvo, 30, was found dead with gunshot and stab wounds on a road in front of a Durga temple behind Hawkers Market in Chashara around 1:30am on Saturday (5 September).
He was the son of Hari Chandra Das of Galachipa in Narayanganj Sadar. His father later filed a murder case with the police station.
A special DB team, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Hasinuzzaman, launched an investigation shortly after the incident. Using information technology and intelligence sources, police arrested three suspects.
The arrestees are Mohammad Sumon alias Maigga Sumon, 45, Siam Ahmed Sijan, 21, and Mohammad Sohan, 24. Police seized a motorcycle and three mobile phones from them. However, the firearms and locally made weapons allegedly used in the killing have yet to be recovered.
According to police, DB conducted a raid at the home of a drug dealer named Fate on 2 September. The suspects allegedly believed that Shuvo had acted as an informant for the raid.
Police said this suspicion, combined with a longstanding dispute over control of the local drug trade, prompted Anik and Sumon to plan the murder.
According to the preliminary interrogation, Sohan, who was allegedly Shuvo’s associate in the drug trade, was lured to the location in exchange for just 10 yaba tablets.
Police said a group of 10–12 people, allegedly led by Anik and Ahid, then attacked Shuvo. Anik and Ahid allegedly opened fire, while other members of the group stabbed him repeatedly with knives.
Additional Superintendent of Police (DB) Hasinuzzaman said the investigation had identified and led to the arrest of three key suspects.
“Efforts are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects and recover the weapons used in the murder,” he said.
