Three prisoners receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after falling ill in Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj died at separate times on Sunday.
Two of them were detainees awaiting trial, while the other was a convicted prisoner. The two detainees died within a gap of 1 hour and 40 minutes.
The deceased were identified as Abul Bashar, 58, Abdul Qayyum, 62, and Md Shahadat Hossain Liton, 52.
Hospital sources said Abul Bashar was brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital in an ill condition by several prison guards, including Md Shahid, in the morning. After examination, doctors declared him dead at 7:25am.
Bashar was from Kutia Lakshmipur village in Kachua upazila of Chandpur. His father’s name was Sekendar Ali. He had been detained in a case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Kachua Police Station.
Abdul Qayyum, another detainee, was taken to the hospital’s emergency department in the morning by several prison guards, including Hemayet Hossain, following instructions from the prison authorities. Doctors declared him dead at 9:05am after examination.
Qayyum was from Golai Padabazar village in Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla. His father was the late Dudu Mia. He had been detained in eight cases.
Meanwhile, convicted prisoner Shahadat Hossain Liton had been admitted to Ward 502 of the hospital’s Medicine Department on August 28 after falling ill. He died while undergoing treatment at around 8:45am on Sunday, according to doctors.
Liton had been detained in a case filed with the Speedy Trial Tribunal (Case No. 11/07) and another case filed with Uttara Police Station (Case No. 9(11)06) under Sections 302, 34 and 201 of the Penal Code.
He was from Pabla village under Daulatpur Police Station in Khulna. His father was the late Abdul Kader.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost said the bodies had been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsies.
