The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Md Arman Hossain Dip, alias “Shooter Arman”, alleged leader of the “Arman Bahini” gang in Khulna, on charges including extortion, terrorism and establishing criminal dominance in several areas of the city.
RAB-6 arrested Arman in Boalmari upazila of Faridpur on Sunday (September 6), said Company Commander Major Md Nazmul at a press briefing in Khulna on Monday.
Based on information provided by Arman, an imported pistol, two shotguns and 12 rounds of shotgun ammunition were recovered, the RAB officer said.
Arman, a resident of Daulatpur in Khulna, had previously been associated with a criminal group operating in Daulatpur and Arongghata, according to RAB. He later allegedly formed his own gang with eight to 10 members.
RAB said the gang attempted to establish control over Daulatpur, Khalishpur, Arongghata, Dighalia and surrounding areas through extortion, intimidation and the display of firearms, creating fear among local residents.
According to the elite police unit, the gang allegedly contacted businesspeople through WhatsApp using foreign phone numbers and demanded extortion payments.
Those who refused were allegedly threatened with having their businesses shut down, physical intimidation and even death.
RAB also said Arman admitted to direct involvement in an attempted killing inside a mosque in Daulatpur on June 17, when two people were shot and wounded. CCTV footage of the incident is reportedly available.
Arman is also accused in several cases filed with different police stations in the Khulna Metropolitan Police area, including murder and attempted murder cases, RAB said.
Major Nazmul said RAB expects to bring other alleged members of the gang to justice soon.
He added that RAB-6 would continue coordinated operations with other law enforcement agencies to maintain public order and ensure the safety of residents.
