Thousands of people stood in rows on both sides of the road, while young students showered fresh flower petals. The area echoed with slogans as people gathered along a 15-kilometre stretch of road to catch a glimpse of their beloved leader and the country’s 23rd President, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and welcome him amid a colourful festive atmosphere.
The scene unfolded on Monday (September 7) morning as the President travelled from Thakurgaon town to the newly established Thakurgaon University campus in the Bhatarmari sugarcane farm area to lay the foundation stone of the university.
At around 11am, people were seen waiting along both sides of the 15-kilometre road stretching from the town’s main thoroughfare to the university area. Students from various schools, colleges and madrasas, along with farmers, workers and people from all walks of life, had been eagerly waiting since morning for a glimpse of their favourite leader.
Expressing her eagerness to see the President after a long wait, Zolekha Begum of Jamalpur village said emotionally, “I have been standing here since morning, waiting to see our Fakhrul.”
The entire area was brought under tight security by law enforcement agencies ahead of the President’s arrival. Despite the heightened security measures, the enthusiasm of the people showed no sign of fading. At 11:19am, when the President’s motorcade began moving towards the venue, students lining both sides of the road started showering flower petals, while the entire area erupted in slogans.
Thakurgaon was celebrating a new chapter in its history, combining the joy of seeing a beloved son of the soil assume the country’s highest office with the realisation of a long-cherished dream—the establishment of a university in the district.
