Two police constables have been arrested in Satkhira with 56 bottles of Corex syrup, which contains codeine, an addictive substance.
The district Detective Branch (DB) arrested constables Mostain Billah and Nazmul Islam near the Satkhira bypass road around 5:30pm on Monday (7 September).
Mostain Billah had previously served with the DB, while Nazmul Islam works as a computer operator at the In-Service Training Centre.
According to the DB, the two were detained based on a tip-off. Police searched their bags and recovered 56 bottles of Corex syrup.
A police source alleged that the two had long been involved in selling and consuming drugs at a shop near the Circuit House intersection in Satkhira town. A recent intelligence report also allegedly accused Mostain of collecting drugs from dealers and selling them.
Police sources further claimed that Mostain sold yaba, Corex and cannabis from a tea and carrom shop after crossing the local market from the Circuit House intersection. The shop owner, Taifur, allegedly assisted him, according to the report. The allegations could not be independently verified, and no comment was available from those named.
Police said the arrests followed surveillance based on allegations of drug-related activities.
Satkhira Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mahmudur Rahman said legal proceedings were being initiated against the two.
Corex is primarily a cough syrup, but its codeine phosphate content can produce intoxicating effects when misused. Codeine-containing Corex syrup is prohibited in Bangladesh.
