Police recovered the bodies of two newborns, a boy and a girl, from a garbage pile in Barishal city’s Natun Bazar area late Tuesday night.
The bodies were found around 11:30pm near the Forest Department office, triggering shock and concern among local residents.
According to police and local sources, city corporation cleaners were clearing garbage at a designated disposal point when cleaner Zakir Hossain spotted two containers in the pile. He found the bodies of the newborns inside and alerted his colleagues and nearby residents, who informed police.
Police from Kotwali Model Police Station arrived at the scene and recovered the bodies. Following the necessary procedures, they were sent to the morgue of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Police have launched an investigation to identify the newborns and determine how and why they died.
Several private healthcare facilities are located around Natun Bazar. Local residents suspect the bodies may have been mixed with medical waste from one of the facilities, but police said no evidence has so far linked any institution to the incident.
Investigators are examining how the bodies ended up at the garbage site, where the babies were born and the circumstances surrounding their deaths. The autopsy report is expected to provide further information about the cause of death.
Police said they are also working to identify those responsible for abandoning the bodies. Legal action will be taken if anyone is found to have been involved.
