A Dhaka court has shown former chief whip and former Patuakhali-2 MP A.S.M. Firoz arrested in two cases filed over the killing of student Naim Howlader and the attempted murder of student Tarek Chowkidar during the anti-discrimination protests.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order on Wednesday following a petition by the investigation officer.
According to the petition, DB Demra Zone Sub-Inspector Nazim Uddin Fakir said protesters taking part in the anti-discrimination movement were attacked with firearms and locally made weapons in front of North Kutubkhali High School in Jatrabari on July 19, 2024.
Student Naim Howlader was shot in the front of his left shoulder and died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital later that day.
Meanwhile, student Tarek Chowkidar was shot on the rooftop of his home in Jatrabari. The investigation officer also alleged Firoz’s involvement in the attempted murder case filed over the incident.
The investigator told the court that Firoz is currently in jail in another murder case filed with Jatrabari Police Station. Showing him arrested in Naim’s murder case was necessary to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killing, arrest other suspects and ensure a proper investigation, the petition said.
After hearing the petition, the court ordered that Firoz be shown arrested in Naim Howlader’s murder case.
Police arrested Firoz from Dhaka’s Banani area on August 23, 2024. He has remained in custody since then.
