The mother of detained Sanatani Jagaran Jote spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari died on Thursday without fulfilling her wish to see her son one last time.
Sandhya Rani Dhar breathed her last at 9:34am at the Sri Sri Pundarik Dham Ashram in Hathazari, Chattogram. She had expressed a desire to spend her final days at the ashram, where Chinmoy had also stayed for a long time.
She had been undergoing treatment at Chattogram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital after falling ill, where doctors detected cancer. However, she reportedly did not want to remain in the hospital and wanted to return to the ashram.
The family had sought parole for Chinmoy so he could see his seriously ill mother, but the request was reportedly rejected by the authorities.
Confirming her death, Chinmoy’s brother Anjan Kumar Dhar told media, “My mother is no more. My brother could not even see his mother while she was alive.”
His elder brother Ranjan Kumar Dhar said the family was taking the body to Hathazari Upazila Health Complex to obtain a medical certificate before applying again for Chinmoy’s parole.
Family members said Sandhya Rani had been under severe mental stress since her son’s arrest. They said repeated bail rejections and news of his illness caused her deep anxiety.
The family also claimed that she suffered a stroke amid the prolonged stress and later developed heart complications while receiving treatment.
Her final rites will be held at the Sri Sri Pundarik Dham Ashram in Hathazari, according to the family.
