The death toll from a bus accident in Trishal, Mymensingh, has risen to three after a United Paribahan bus lost control and crashed into a Mahindra vehicle and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Friday morning.
The deceased were identified as Raitul Hasan Khan, 40, son of Gias Uddin of Kazir Shimla; Bazlur Rahman alias Dalim, son of Nurul Islam of Borogram Munshibari; and Almina, 14, of Kajlar Char. All were residents of Trishal.
The accident occurred around 8:30am on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the Kazir Shimla area of Trishal upazila.
Police said two Mahindra vehicles were parked beside the highway while a CNG-run auto-rickshaw was travelling towards Mymensingh. The United Paribahan bus, coming from the same direction, first hit one of the parked Mahindras before crashing into the auto-rickshaw.
Two people died on the spot, while 10 critically injured passengers were rescued and taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Almina later died while undergoing treatment around 2:30pm.
All the injured were passengers of the Mahindra and CNG-run auto-rickshaw, according to sources.
Bus passenger Bristy Akter said the driver suddenly became unconscious while driving, causing the bus to lose control. The driver’s assistant tried to take control but failed.
The bus subsequently crashed into the boundary wall of Pacific Ideal High School beside the highway and overturned.
Trishal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mansur Ahmed said three critically injured passengers were referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while the others were being treated at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Legal proceedings over the accident are underway.
