A schoolteacher has been detained in Kushtia’s Daulatpur for allegedly making offensive remarks about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s Bengali pronunciation during a classroom lesson, police said.
The detained teacher, Golam Kibria Lalon, teaches Bengali at Pragpur Secondary School.
He was detained around 11am on Wednesday from the Pragpur area of the Bheramara-Pragpur regional highway.
According to students, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon while Lalon was teaching a Bengali class to 10th-grade students.
During the lesson, he brought up the Prime Minister’s recent Bengali-language speech at the United Nations and allegedly made comments about his pronunciation.
The students later informed their parents, after which the issue spread locally. On Wednesday morning, several parents and local residents gathered at the school premises and demanded action against the teacher.
Police arrived and took control of the situation before detaining Lalon.
School headteacher and Pragpur Union Parishad chairman Ashrafuzzaman Mukul said Lalon denied making any derogatory remarks when questioned.
However, he reportedly said that he had commented that the Prime Minister’s Bengali pronunciation had become somewhat unclear because he had spent a long time abroad.
Daulatpur police chief Khaledur Rahman said the teacher was detained following allegations of making offensive remarks about the Prime Minister and creating tension at the school.
“The matter is being investigated,” the police official said.
