DHAKA: The schoolteacher detained in Kushtia’s Daulatpur over alleged derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was released and taken safely to his home on the prime minister’s instructions, said Mahdi Amin, the prime minister’s adviser and spokesperson for his office.

Mahdi Amin disclosed the information in a Facebook post on Thursday (October 1) night.

In the post, Mahdi Amin said tension had erupted among local students, parents and residents in Daulatpur after a schoolteacher allegedly made offensive and derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in a classroom. Following protests on the school premises, police detained the teacher and took him to the police station.

The prime minister was informed about the incident and became concerned, Amin said. He then instructed the concerned police station to release the teacher respectfully and ensure that he was taken safely to his home. Police subsequently complied with the prime minister’s instructions, he added.

Amin further said the prime minister believes that differences of opinion are natural and that every person has the right to their own views and perspectives. Even when people disagree with someone’s opinion, they should respect that person’s right to express it, he said.

“Respect for differing opinions and freedom of expression is the strength of democracy,” Amin wrote, adding that the prime minister believes positive conduct, mutual respect and a culture of coexistence can strengthen society.

He was later released on the prime minister’s instructions.
