Student protests have spread across Paris and several other cities in France, with hundreds of high school students taking to the streets over shortages of teachers and classrooms, dilapidated school buildings and funding demands.
Clashes broke out between protesters and riot police in several cities on Friday (October 2).
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said 1,747 people were arrested across the country during the day.
Speaking to French television channel TF1 on Friday night, Nuñez said riots and urban violence were increasing and that authorities were taking all necessary measures to stop them.
The protests began in Paris last week before spreading to other cities.
Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said the situation had gone beyond demonstrations by high school students. He said 735 of France’s 3,700 schools had suffered some form of damage amid the unrest.
Education Minister Édouard Geffray claimed that people from outside the schools had also joined the protests.
