DHAKA: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Dr. Shafiqul Rahman has said that no human being is above mistakes.

He made the remarks in a post on his Facebook page on Sunday (October 4), referring to the protest by freedom fighter and former lawmaker Major (retd.) Akhtaruzzaman against passenger harassment and irregularities at the airport.

Dr. Shafiqul Rahman said Major (retd.) Akhtaruzzaman had raised his voice against the suffering and harassment faced by passengers at the airport, as well as the authorities’ negligence, irregularities and wrongdoing. In doing so, he had effectively become the voice of protesting passengers, particularly expatriates returning home.

“Instead of taking his protest seriously and addressing the weaknesses, he was arrested. Even various degrading measures were taken to humiliate a two-time former member of parliament and a freedom fighter in public,” he said.

The Jamaat chief added, “The people are not blind; they are watching everything. By protesting against injustice, he has demonstrated courage and has become a hero in the hearts of those who have suffered.”

Concluding his post, Dr. Shafiqul Rahman wrote, “May Allah Almighty increase his honour. Ameen.”

Earlier, in a Facebook post on October 2, Dr. Shafiqul Rahman had demanded the immediate release of Major (retd.) Akhtaruzzaman and the withdrawal of the case filed against him. He alleged that Akhtaruzzaman had not physically assaulted anyone and described the allegations against him as “completely false.”
