Bangladesh is observing World Post Day on Friday, highlighting efforts to modernise postal services and expand their role in parcel delivery, e-commerce and logistics.
The Directorate of Posts is observing Postal Service Week from October 9 to 15 under the theme “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities”.
Programmes include letter-writing festivals, stamp exhibitions and postal service fairs at universities and other venues across the country.
World Post Day is observed on October 9 to commemorate the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874. The observance was introduced in 1970 following a decision at the UPU Congress in Tokyo in 1969.
As digital communication reduces reliance on traditional letters, the Bangladesh Post Office is expanding services such as digital parcel tracking, home pickup and delivery, fulfilment centres and the transportation of agricultural produce and seasonal fruits. It is also planning entrepreneur-run franchise post offices to extend services and create employment.
According to the Directorate of Posts, around 811 tonnes of goods have been transported through Speed Post since March 2026. Outbound international parcel volumes rose from 243 tonnes in the first quarter of fiscal 2025–26 to 316 tonnes in the corresponding period of fiscal 2026–27, an increase of nearly 30 per cent.
Postal services will remain operational nationwide on October 9 and 10, except for savings bank activities, the Directorate of Posts said.
World Post Day highlights the continuing role of postal networks in connecting communities, facilitating trade and delivering services, particularly in areas with limited access to digital connectivity and other delivery options.
