The Bangladesh Coast Guard and River Police jointly detained 13 people and seized two dredgers and three bulkhead vessels during a crackdown on illegal sand extraction from the Padma River in Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila early Friday.

According to a Coast Guard statement, the operation was carried out around 5:00 am in the Char-Janajat area under Shibchar Police Station based on confidential information.

During the drive, the joint team caught the suspects while they were allegedly extracting sand illegally from the Padma River. Two dredgers and three bulkhead vessels used in the operation were seized.

Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan said legal proceedings against the detainees and the seized equipment are underway.

He said the Bangladesh Coast Guard would continue such operations to protect riverside cropland and homesteads from the harmful impacts of illegal sand mining.
