Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that attempting to bring the Awami League back to power in the name of opposing the government would amount to betraying the martyrs of the July uprising.
He made the remarks on Monday, October 19, at the inauguration of the July Memorial and the modernisation of Osmani Udyan in Dhaka.
Criticising the opposition, Tarique said it was opposing the government simply for the sake of opposition. He alleged that opposition leaders had failed to embrace the spirit of July and did not attend the inauguration despite being invited.
The prime minister said the opposition had returned to its previous position and urged it to engage in constructive criticism.
Although political parties might not agree on every issue, he said, there should be no disagreement over matters concerning the interests of the people.
Tarique said the 1971 Liberation War and the July 2024 uprising shared the same objective of establishing democratic rights.
He said Bangladesh had regained its democratic rights through the July uprising and that the July Memorial bears the names of 813 martyrs who sacrificed their lives for that cause.
Their sacrifice, he added, had paved the way for the establishment of a democratic government.
The people had exercised their democratic rights by choosing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to govern the country for the next five years, he said.
Addressing the opposition, the prime minister also called for joint efforts to raise awareness about dengue, noting that Aedes mosquitoes do not distinguish between members of the ruling and opposition parties.
He also instructed doctors to ensure cleanliness and a hygienic environment in hospitals.
