The Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB) is conducting research and implementing initiatives to help reduce road crash deaths by half by 2030.
The organisation held a discussion on October 19 as part of its observance of National Road Safety Day 2026, which falls on October 22.
The discussion focused on the major causes of road crashes, accident statistics in Bangladesh, limitations of existing road transport laws and policies, and the application of the Safe System Approach to ensure safer roads.
Prof Dr AKM Fazlur Rahman, executive adviser to CIPRB, attended the event as chief guest. Executive Director Dr Aminur Rahman chaired the meeting, while Kazi Borhan Uddin, programme manager of the organisation’s road safety project, presented the keynote paper.
The presentation outlined the global road safety situation, crash statistics in Bangladesh, major causes of accidents and CIPRB’s initiatives marking National Road Safety Day. It also highlighted the responsibilities of pedestrians, passengers and drivers in ensuring safe road use.
An open discussion, moderated by Prof Dr AKM Fazlur Rahman, raised several proposals to strengthen road safety. These included providing first-aid training to ambulance drivers, ensuring the inclusion of persons with disabilities in road safety initiatives, developing a manual for post-crash care and involving representatives of road transport owners’ and workers’ organisations.
Participants also stressed the need for wider public awareness of the Safe System Approach in Bangladesh.
Potential areas for further research included reducing the underreporting of road crashes, encouraging behavioural changes among road users and ensuring the use of appropriate child safety seats in vehicles.
CIPRB Deputy Executive Director and Director of its RTI Prevention and Research Unit, Dr Selim Mahmud Chowdhury, presented details of the organisation’s ongoing road safety initiatives and answered questions from participants.
In his concluding remarks, Dr Aminur Rahman said CIPRB had long been conducting research and implementing various initiatives to prevent road crashes and would continue its efforts.
He expressed hope that these activities would make a significant contribution to fulfilling the government’s commitment to halving road crash deaths by 2030.
