A bridge has collapsed in Rangunia upazila Dudhpukuria–Padua area due to strong flood currents triggered by continuous heavy rainfall and hill runoff, severing road communication between Bandarban and Rangamati.
The incident occurred around 4:00am on Friday when a largest part of the bridge gave way under intense water pressure.
Fortunately, no vehicle was on the bridge at the time. However, immediately after the incident, all types of vehicular movement on the road were suspended for safety reasons , causing severe disruption for commuters between the two districts.
Local sources said the water flow beneath the bridge had been rising steadily for several days. The pressure from stream run fall eventually weakened the structure, leading to its sudden collapse.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Rangunia, Debabrata Das, confirmed the incident, saying the bridge—under the Roads and Highways Department—collapsed due to strong current. Authorities have been informed, and necessary steps are being initiated.
He added that with the collapse of the Dudhpukuria bridge in Padua Union, road communication between Bandarban and Rangamati via Rangunia has been completely halted.
Meanwhile, ferry services in the Lichu Bagan area across the Karnaphuli River have also been suspended due to rising water levels, further worsening the situation.
The disruption has left thousands of commuters facing significant hardship as key connectivity between the two hill districts remains cut off.
