Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday directed the authorities concerned to accelerate the implementation of two major waste-to-energy projects in Dhaka, stressing the need to complete them on schedule using the best available environmentally friendly technology.
He issued the directive at a meeting on the proposed projects for Aminbazar under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Matuail under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), held at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Officials informed the meeting that China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC Group) will invest in the Aminbazar waste-to-energy plant, which will process around 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily to generate 42.5 megawatts of electricity.
The facility is expected to begin supplying electricity to the national grid by August 2028 and continue operations for 25 years.
The Prime Minister was also briefed on the Matuail project, to be implemented by South Korea’s B&F Group.
The project will convert municipal waste into methane gas to generate approximately 81,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, or about 221 megawatt-hours per day.
In addition to electricity generation, the facility will produce solar power, organic fertiliser, animal feed and eco-friendly bricks while processing 3,000 to 3,500 tonnes of waste each day.
Officials said the project would significantly improve urban waste management while supporting climate change mitigation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
To ensure smooth and timely implementation, the Prime Minister instructed the ministries of Local Government, Power and Environment to convene an inter-ministerial meeting and resolve any outstanding issues without delay.
He reiterated that both projects must be completed within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining high environmental standards and adopting advanced green technologies.
The meeting was attended by Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, DNCC Administrator M Safiqul Islam Khan, DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar, Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon, and other senior government officials.
