Bandarban still struggles as floodwaters recede

Although floodwaters have begun to recede in Bandarban, the suffering of affected residents continues, with many areas still cut off and basic services disrupted.

As water levels gradually fall, families have started returning home from shelters and are busy cleaning mud and debris from their houses. However, much of their furniture, food supplies and daily essentials have been damaged or destroyed by the water.

Shortages of safe drinking water, food and medical care persist across several areas. While some families have left shelters, many in low-lying areas remain displaced.

The Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are continuing relief distribution and medical assistance in the affected areas.

Road communication remains severely disrupted. The Bandarban–Rangamati route is still disconnected due to road collapse near the Bridgeghata area and submerged sections along the road.

Although limited movement has resumed on the Bandarban–Keranihat road, transport remains difficult.

In upazilas such as Lama, Alikadam, Naikhongchhari, Ruma, Thanchi and Rowangchhari, submerged link roads have hindered travel between areas, further isolating communities.

Water levels in the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers have started to decline following reduced rainfall since Sunday morning. So, many roads and homes in low-lying areas remain underwater.

District Commissioner Md Saniul Ferdous said six people have died in the disaster so far — five due to landslides and one child after being swept away by floodwaters. A total of 26 landslides have been reported across the district.

Around 6,250 people have taken shelter in 220 centres, while approximately 8,500 families remain stranded by floodwaters.

Authorities warn that full recovery may take time as access, sanitation and essential supplies remain major challenges.
