Four children drown in Narsingdi river

Four children drowned while bathing in a river in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi on Thursday afternoon.

The victims were identified as Tabia, 13, daughter of Shamim Mia; Jannat Islam, 9, and Asheya, 9, daughters of Rubel Mia; and Sumaiya, 10, daughter of Billal Mia. All were students of the local Gausia Nur-e-Madina Girls’ Madrasa in Borkanda village.

According to family members and local residents, six to seven madrasa students went to bathe in the Kakon River after classes. When one of the children began to drown, the others tried to rescue her but were also swept underwater.

Locals rushed to the scene and rescued five children. Three were taken to Raipura Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.

Two others were rescued alive, but one of them later died after being taken home. Another child was initially reported missing.

Dr Ashraful Rahman, a medical officer at Raipura Upazila Health Complex, said three children were brought to the hospital dead.

Raipura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mujibur Rahman said the next course of action would be taken after consulting the victims’ families.
