Bangladesh observed July Martyrs’ Day 2026 in Tokyo with solemn tributes and a renewed commitment to uphold the ideals of those who sacrificed their lives during the July Mass Uprising.

At a programme held at the Bangladesh Embassy, Ambassador Md. Daud Ali reaffirmed the mission’s full support for rebuilding the nation in line with the aspirations of the martyrs.

The event honoured martyr Abu Sayeed and others who lost their lives in the uprising, according to an official message.

The programme began with a one-minute silence in memory of the fallen, while messages from the President and the Prime Minister were read out. The national flag was flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.

In his address, Ambassador Daud Ali reflected on the background of the July Mass Uprising, highlighting the courage and sacrifices that helped transform a student movement into a nationwide movement.

He paid special tribute to Abu Sayeed, whose defiance against authoritarian rule became a turning point in the struggle for justice.

The ambassador said the uprising opened a path toward building a state based on equality, good governance, and freedom from repression, including enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.

He noted that the restoration of people’s voting rights through a fair electoral process has brought renewed hope for the country’s democratic future.

He also expressed confidence in the current government’s leadership, saying its commitment to democracy and good governance has added fresh momentum to national development.
