Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has formed a high-level committee to address longstanding challenges in Bangladesh’s textile sector. The committee will be led jointly by the Finance Adviser and the Commerce Minister, aiming to find sustainable solutions to the industry’s persistent problems.
The announcement was made on Wednesday (July 22) by Shawkat Aziz Russell, President of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association, after a courtesy meeting with the prime minister at the Secretariat.
Russell noted that many of the sector’s challenges are deeply rooted and have remained unresolved for years, despite previous government efforts. Even with strong policy measures, he said, it may take around one and a half years to fully resolve these issues. However, entrepreneurs are willing to give the government that time.
During the meeting, several critical issues were highlighted, including:
Gas and electricity shortages
Financial constraints in the sector
Market competition and dumping practices
The government is already providing a 5% incentive to support the industry, which Russell described as a positive step.
He also expressed optimism that reopening closed textile factories could generate employment for up to 1.5 million people in a relatively short time.
However, he emphasized that addressing unfair competition, particularly dumping in the global market, will be essential for sustainable recovery.
Industry leaders believe that with sincere government support and coordinated policy action, Bangladesh’s textile sector can regain momentum and strengthen its position in the global market.
