Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Sunday informed Parliament that Tk 982.92 crore was spent by various ministries and divisions on programmes marking Mujib Borsho during the previous Awami League সরকারের tenure.

Responding to a starred question from opposition lawmaker Md Mahbubur Rahman Belal (Rangpur-3) in the Jatiya Sangsad, the minister said the funds were used for a range of activities nationwide.

These included district- and upazila-level programmes, installation of portraits and memorial structures, construction of bronze, copper and marble statues at government offices, and setting up state-sponsored digital countdown boards.

In reply to a supplementary question, Khosru said the government has not yet decided on conducting any audit or investigation into the expenditure or taking further action.

He, however, noted that the issue should be viewed in a broader context. “It is not only Mujib Borsho. There are many other issues. We are taking stock of all these matters,” he told the House.

The finance minister added that the government is reviewing various areas of public spending and that appropriate decisions would be taken after completing the assessment.

In his follow-up query, Belal asked whether the government would initiate an audit into the expenditure and ensure accountability for any misuse of public funds. He also sought clarification on steps to prevent excessive or unnecessary spending in future for promoting individuals.
