The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly has opened in New York with Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman presiding over the proceedings, as Prime Minister Tarique Rahman joined other world leaders at the opening events on Tuesday.
The prime minister is in New York to attend the General Assembly session, marking his first participation in the UN’s annual high-level gathering as Bangladesh’s head of government.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended a welcome breakfast hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres for heads of state and government before joining other world leaders at the opening of the 81st General Assembly session.
Dr Khalilur Rahman assumed the presidency of the 81st session earlier this month, becoming the first Bangladeshi representative to hold the position in four decades.
The UN’s official records identify him as president of the General Assembly’s 81st session.
During his visit, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to take part in several high-level meetings on climate change, global inequality and the Rohingya crisis.
He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with several heads of government and meet senior officials of the UN and international organisations.
The prime minister is scheduled to address the General Assembly’s general debate on September 24.
His agenda is expected to include climate change, sustainable development, the Rohingya crisis, economic cooperation and other international issues.
The General Assembly’s 81st session is taking place amid discussions on major global conflicts, artificial intelligence, climate challenges and the future of multilateral cooperation.
