A 35-member delegation will accompany Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during his visit to New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam said on Sunday.
He disclosed the information at a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Bangladesh’s participation in the UNGA session.
The delegation will include Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir. Bangladesh’s ambassador to the United Nations and permanent representative in New York will join the prime minister’s delegation there, the foreign secretary said.
Asked whether the prime minister would attend an event in San Francisco, Siam said a minister-level delegation would attend the programme.
Regarding security, the foreign secretary said necessary arrangements had been made and that the United States also has responsibility for the security of visiting delegations. Bangladesh is in regular communication with the relevant US authorities to ensure the safety of all members of the delegation.
Among the prime minister’s accompanying officials and political figures are Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman, Revolutionary Workers Party President Saiful Haque and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Secretary General Mufti Golam Mohiuddin Ikram.
Foreign Minister and UN General Assembly President Dr Khalilur Rahman will join the delegation in New York.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to leave Dhaka for New York on Monday, September 21. He is expected to deliver his first address to the UN General Assembly on September 24 and return home after completing his New York programme on September 25.
