Prime Minister Tarique Rahman returned home on Sunday morning after completing a five-day visit to New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The aircraft carrying the prime minister landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 8:21am via Dubai. He was accompanied by his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, and other members of his delegation.

Tarique left New York for Dubai on an Emirates flight at around 11pm local time on Friday. He arrived in Dubai on Saturday evening before departing for Dhaka at around 2am.

During his five-day visit, the prime minister attended various UN events and held bilateral meetings with heads of state and government, senior UN officials and representatives of international economic and development organisations.

At a high-level meeting on the Rohingya crisis, Tarique said safe and dignified repatriation was the only solution to the protracted crisis and called for stronger international support to create conditions conducive to voluntary repatriation.

He also held a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Guterres expressed appreciation for Bangladesh’s role in hosting Rohingya refugees and its contribution to UN peacekeeping operations, while also praising the country’s role in climate resilience and multilateral initiatives.

Tarique separately met Julie Bishop, the UN secretary-general’s special envoy on Myanmar, and UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih.

Tarique also held separate meetings with Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Maldivian Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, discussing bilateral relations and new areas of regional and international cooperation.

He met the prime ministers of Pakistan, Croatia, Thailand and Haiti, discussing bilateral ties, trade and investment, development cooperation and regional and international issues.

On the final day of his visit, Tarique held a bilateral meeting with Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.

The visit also included Tarique’s first address to the UN General Assembly since becoming prime minister, where he outlined Bangladesh’s priorities on democracy, development, global peace and security, climate change and the Rohingya crisis.
