Prime Minister Tarique Rahman conveyed to world leaders a message of Bangladesh’s democratic progress and his vision of building a humane Bangladesh during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, said his adviser and spokesperson Dr Mahdi Amin.
He made the remarks at a press conference on the Prime Minister’s New York visit at the Karabi Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Wednesday.
“The Prime Minister conveyed the message of Bangladesh’s democratic progress to world leaders and spoke about building a humane Bangladesh,” Mahdi said.
He added that several world leaders congratulated the Prime Minister, describing it as an achievement for Bangladesh.
Referring to the Rohingya crisis, Mahdi said the Prime Minister presented five specific proposals for resolving the issue and stressed that Myanmar must take responsibility for resolving the crisis.
He said world leaders praised Bangladesh for its generosity in hosting Rohingya refugees for years.
During his four-day visit, Tarique spoke in support of Palestine and presented a roadmap for a self-reliant Bangladesh, Mahdi said. The Prime Minister held bilateral meetings with the leaders of 11 countries, where they discussed opportunities for expanding cooperation with Bangladesh.
Discussions also covered manpower exports to Muslim-majority countries, he said. Mahdi claimed that UN Secretary-General António Guterres congratulated Bangladesh’s elected government and that the Prime Minister’s meetings also covered how the government had worked to protect human rights over the past seven months.
At a meeting with the World Bank, the Prime Minister briefed representatives on various social programmes, including the Family Card initiative, Mahdi said.
He also mentioned the meeting with Boeing, saying it could create opportunities to further expand the fleet of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Asked about a direct press briefing by the Prime Minister for journalists, Mahdi said journalists would be informed about the matter.
PM’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibly, Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Ruman and members of the PMO press wing were present at the press conference.
