Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said mental health protection is an important aspect of the government’s public welfare-oriented health policy.
In a message marking World Mental Health Day 2026, to be observed on October 10, the prime minister stressed the need to ensure mental healthcare for all, eliminate stigma and discrimination, and expand access to mental health services across the country.
He said mental health was closely linked to human dignity, family, society and the overall well-being of the state.
The prime minister also highlighted the importance of listening to people’s experiences of mental health conditions and called for collective efforts to overcome fear, shame, superstition and discrimination associated with mental illness.
He said the government was working to expand mental health services at upazila and union levels, develop skilled professionals, strengthen referral systems and introduce technology-based counselling services.
Tarique Rahman also underscored the need for mental healthcare for pregnant women, children and adolescents, alongside school-based mental health services.
He urged healthcare professionals, families, educational institutions, the media and society to work together to raise awareness and ensure that no one feels ashamed or reluctant to seek mental health support.
He expressed hope that collective efforts would help build a humane, welfare-oriented and safe Bangladesh where everyone could lead a healthy and dignified life.
