CEC to meet acting speaker tomorrow

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin will meet Acting Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal on Tuesday (July 28) to discuss the election of Bangladesh’s 23rd President.

Election Commission (EC) officials confirmed the meeting on Monday.

EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the Election Commission will meet the Acting Speaker at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban at 11:00 am to discuss the presidential election.

According to a letter sent by the EC Secretary to the Parliament Secretariat, the Chief Election Commissioner will be accompanied by the Election Commissioners and the Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat.

Deputy Secretary Mohammad Monir Hossain and the CEC’s Private Secretary, Mohammad Ashraful Alam, will also be present at the Speaker’s office as supporting officials.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on July 24, citing health reasons, and his resignation was accepted the same day by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram.

In line with the Constitution, the Speaker assumed the responsibilities of Acting President until a new President is elected and takes office.

Following the Speaker’s assumption of presidential duties, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal has been serving as the Acting Speaker.

Under the Presidential Election Act, 1991, the Chief Election Commissioner serves as the Returning Officer for the presidential election.

The election schedule is announced following consultations with the Speaker, while Members of Parliament elect the President through voting.
