HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered a case against Meta India Head Arun Srinivas and several Facebook and Instagram accounts over the alleged circulation of morphed and objectionable posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recent CJP protests.
The case was filed following complaints by two individuals, who alleged that they found digitally manipulated videos and images of the prime minister on Instagram portraying him in an obscene, derogatory and misleading manner.
According to the complaints, the posts and accompanying comments contained offensive language and were intended to spread misinformation, defame public figures and disturb public order.
Police said the content appeared to have been digitally altered or generated using artificial intelligence and is being investigated under relevant legal provisions.
The complaints were lodged by businessman S Aravind Reddy and Telangana BJP activist T Saikiran Goud.
The development comes days after Meta faced criticism from the Indian government over the temporary blocking of a video posted from the prime minister’s official Facebook account.
Meta has since assured the government that it has strengthened safeguards for high-profile accounts, saying posts from the prime minister’s account will undergo enhanced internal review before any moderation action is taken.
