Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, on Thursday announced a long march from Dhaka to Chattogram on September 5 as part of a nationwide campaign to press for public rights.
The announcement came during an 11-party alliance sit-in programme at Muktangan in the capital, held in protest against soaring prices of essential commodities, what the alliance described as “ghost” electricity bills, and the deteriorating law and order situation.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman warned that if the long march was obstructed, it would continue “with twice the strength” until it reached its destination. He also demanded an immediate withdrawal of the recent price hikes of essential goods.
The alliance also announced three additional long marches: Dhaka to Rangpur on September 19, Dhaka to Khulna on October 10, and Dhaka to Sylhet on October 24.
Speaking at the programme, National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam accused the government of repeatedly betraying the people. He said the government had failed to ensure basic public rights, including access to affordable gas and electricity, and therefore had no justification for remaining in power.
Nahid also criticised the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), alleging that it was once again attempting to seize control of university dormitories “in the manner of the Chhatra League.”
