The 11-party alliance-led long march from Dhaka to Rangpur began with an inaugural rally at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital on Saturday morning.
The programme, led by Jamaat-e-Islami, is being held with eight demands, including implementation of the referendum verdict, trial of the July massacre, resolving shortages of electricity, fuel, gas and fertiliser, curbing price hikes, improving law and order, ending corruption, extortion and land grabbing, stopping excessive politicisation, and implementing the Teesta Master Plan.
The rally began at 7am, with the procession scheduled to leave for Rangpur around 8am. It is expected to hold roadside rallies in Gazipur, Tangail, Sirajganj, Bogura and Gaibandha before reaching Rangpur. A concluding rally is scheduled to be held at Rangpur Zilla School ground in the evening.
The alliance has urged the government and administration not to obstruct the programme and called on its leaders and activists to remain patient and restrained in the face of provocation.
